Rain maker : Majek Fashek returns!
Rain maker and controversial Nigeria’s internationally acclaimed reggae star is in town.
The reggae star once tipped to succeed late super star reggae icon, Bob Marley, is in Nigeria to take part in the Igue festival, an annual traditional Benin, Edo State festival supervised by the Oba of Benin.
HE came into the country unannounced about three weeks ago. Although Weekend Groove couldn’t confirm who aided the return of the reggae star, we gathered that while his stay in the country lasts, he will be under the care of his former record label owner and promoter, Architect Aib Ighieghon, owner of Aibotonia promotions.
Currently holed up somewhere on Victoria Island in Lagos, we spoke to the star through a childhood friend and former band mate, Rasta Black ‘O’ Rice. In the brief telephone conversation, the dread locked rastafarian told us “I am in Nigeria to take part in the Igue festival by Jah grace.”
Although he assured this reporter he was ready to re-launch his career which took a nose dive because of his alleged addiction to booze and drugs, he sounded a bit incoherent over the phone. Rasta Black Rice who also added his voice to the conversation assured that Majek was okay and ready for his rebirth and relaunch.
He said: “Right now he has in his possession, a brand new 10 track album which he is going to release on his own private label, Under Ground System”.
While making case for Majek on his state of health, Rasta Rice said “Majek was used and dumped by certain individuals who lured him home the last time he returned. It was the frustration that turned him into his own enemy. But this time around, he is feeding well and looks good”. He also added that Majek will be here until April next year and during the period, he will be trying to promote his new work.
On the planned reunion of their former group Jahstix, the dread-locked rastamsimply added “Jah time is the best”
